For those of us suffering from acid reflux, eating may not be too much fun, more so if you are not sure the cause of your acid reflux, or which foods you should be eating to help reduce the effects of the stomach acid in the esophagus. Now, it is generally considered spicy foods cause the problems with acid reflux , but any food or combination may be at fault. Because tomato based foods can cause an acid reflux problem, foods like pizza get a double hit since greasy foods are often the culprit as well. Spaghetti dishes that have tomato sauce in them cause a lot of problems for folks that suffer from acid reflux, but the one thing you need to do is to test each food to see how it affects your stomach. If after you’ve eaten an orange you get a lot of acid reflux, then may be you want to eliminate oranges from your diet for a while.
Now there are some foods that do help acid reflux, and they are thought to be healthy for you to eat anyway. Garlic helps some people, although I have seen that garlic causes reflux in others. What you Have to do is plan your meals so each is healthy, getting plenty of fibre enery day. Some say that a handful of almonds each day can help, although again, there are reports that some suffer with these as well.
Now, when it comes to sleeping, acid reflux can stop you from getting a good night’s sleep, but there are things you can try that can assist you. For example, the acid reflux wedge pillow is specially designed for you to sleep on with your head always staying above your stomach, by keeping you more upright, whether you sleep on your side or your back. This position stops the stomach acid from flowing back up the esophagus. These specially designed pillows are made to raise your whole torso, starting from the hip area, not just the neck and head. There are some wedge pillows that just fit under the head that just twist your neck while trying to raise it, but these are not recommended. From all the reports I’ve seen the gradual incline from waist to head works very well. However there are various things to watchout forfor a wedge pillow for acid reflux.
The pillows do not all come in the same width, and to benefit more fully, 24 inches, or the normal width of a pillow is at least what is needed, so that you move around on the wedge pillow without your head dropping off it. The wedge pillows are of various depths, from a mere 2 inches up to 7 inches, and I think I’ve even seen some pillows than this. The majority wedge pillows for acid reflux encourage you to use your own normal pillow on top of it, and for the most part, these are full length wedge pillows about 30-32 inches from hips to the top of the head. Before you purchase, make sure you consider very thoroughly so you can be sure it will suit your purpose.
So, there are just a few of the methods to reduce acid reflux, but another easy thing to do is to make your meals smaller, but eat more of them. By doing this your stomach doesn’t have to digest as much all at once, your stomach isn’t as full so there is less pressure to force it out of the stomach and back up the esophagus. Give these ideas a try and see if you can lessen some of the acid reflux medication you are presently taking.
